Medical Specialist: Geriatric Medicine

The role of your geriatrician and your multidisciplinary team.

Geriatricians are skilled to inspire clinical environments and management practices that meet the needs of the complex, older patient. I am here to promote a therapeutic environment for older patients, recognising their personal, medical, social, functional and psychological needs. To reach for our goals for our clients, I heed the advice of a team of knowledgeable and skilful health care professionals. A co-ordinated multi-disciplinary team approach is central to the provision of best practice in Geriatric Medicine.

Our multidisciplinary team comprises medical, nursing and allied health staff (including dietetian, neuropsychologist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, physiotherapist, social worker and speech pathologist). Accurate, comprehensive assessment is critical for effective management. Syndromal and atypical disease presentation is a core feature of Geriatric Medicine, increasing diagnostic complexity. Co-morbid disease modifies and complicates intervention.

Working together, our team assists patients to achieve their maximum level of physical, functional and cognitive potential, whilst promoting positive attitudes towards the care of older patients.
